#TogetherStronger at Canolfan S4C Yr Egin – come and join our Red Wall!

With ten days to go until the start of the 2022 World Cup, Canolfan S4C Yr Egin is proud to announce that there will be a ‘Fanzone’ available for everyone to enjoy the Welsh football team’s matches.

Wales will play the United States of America on the 21st of November at 7pm, Iran on the 25th of November at 10am and England on the 29th of November at 7pm, as part of the group stages of the tournament. Everyone is therefore very welcome – individuals, groups, families and societies alike, to come and watch the games on a big screen, for free, at Yr Egin.

Carys Ifan, Director of the centre said, “This is a championship that Wales has not been a part of since 1958 and it is an absolute pleasure to offer Yr Egin as a place for everyone to support the national team. ‘Team play is the best play’ is affectively the motto of the national football team and I would say that watching and celebrating the success of the Welsh team together is also extremely important. There will be a lot of fun for everyone of all ages when they come together to support and enjoy what we have on offer, as well as S4C’s commentary!”

All you need to do in order to attend is register your place on our website – yregin.cymru.

The café and bar will be open during the games for you to enjoy drinks and refreshments while watching the football and there will of course be a friendly and welcoming atmosphere here, so it’s a perfect place to bring your children to support the Welsh team.

Don’t forget to learn the special song that was recorded at Yr Egin a few weeks ago – ‘O Sir Gâr i Qatar’. Almost a thousand children from 27 schools across Carmarthenshire came together to perform and record the song to support the Welsh football team’s campaign in this year’s World Cup.

Composing, performing and recording ‘O Sir Gâr i Qatar’ was a joint project between Canolfan S4C Yr Egin, Menter Cwm Gwendraeth Elli, Menter Gorllewin Sir Gâr and Menter Dinefwr. The song was composed by members of Theatr Plant y Cwm (a club run by Menter Cwm Gwendraeth Elli) together with the singer and composer, Steffan Rhys Williams, during a composition workshop.

Llinos Jones, Yr Egin’s Engagement Officer said, “Once I heard the song, I was determined that every child in Carmarthenshire should have the opportunity to learn it and then come to Yr Egin to record it. I’m so glad that this was able to happen and it’s really been a pleasure to witness the children have an unforgettable experience whilst working on the project. We are very grateful to all the schools that have taken part, to Steffan Rhys Williams for co-composing and making the recording process possible, and to the local language initiatives for their work on the project.”

Elen Davies from Menter Cwm Gwendraeth Elli added, “It was nice to be able to play such a leading role in giving the pupils of Carmarthenshire a platform to sing their support for the Welsh football team. Being part of the project was a very special experience, it is a memory that will stay with me forever. Many thanks to the team at Yr Egin and to Llinos for all their hard work and support. Get singing ‘O Sir Gâr i Qatar’, and join us as we support Wales.”

The song, which is now an anthem for Carmarthenshire’s primary school children, was released at the ‘Hwyl yr Hydref’ event held at Yr Egin and you can join in and learn the words by going to our website – yregin.cymru.

Join us over the next few weeks as we put a spin on the motto of the Welsh football team… Best Play is Team Play – Best Support is Team Support!  Come and be part of the Red Wall by coming and enjoying these games at Canolfan S4C yr Egin.
